Beginning
with an intimate view of the natural history and indigenous
cultures of northeastern Alaska, OIL ON ICE looks at the role
of oil in Alaska's history and culminates with the national
battle over plans to drill for oil in the Arctic National
Wildlife Refuge.
The
Senate's 2002 decision to protect "America's
Serengeti" from oil development is a milestone on the
road that may lead the world away from dependence on fossil
fuels toward the use of energy-efficient, sustainable technologies.
