| Pigeon Point: California State Parks Foundation Located along California's San Mateo Coast, the majestic Pigeon Point Light Station has served as a beacon and inspiration for mariners as well as millions of people traveling along California's coastal highway. More than 100 years of severe coastal weather had taken its toll on this 19th century historic landmark, which holds the distinction of being one of the oldest, as well as the tallest, lighthouses on the West Coast. Fortunately, the transfer of Pigeon Point Light Station to California State Parks has made it possible for the agency to restore this important piece of California's history. The California State Parks Foundation is currently working to raise the significant public and private funding needed to complete a restoration project of the entire lighthouse. More than 100,000 people visit Pigeon Point Light Station State Historic Park each year, including more than 11,000 youth hostel guests and 2,500 schoolchildren participating in educational programs. |
| Zaytuna College
Zaytuna College in Berkeley, CA, has developed a unique curriculum for a Bachelor's program that relies on various pedagogical approaches such as selective memorization and critical analysis. The curriculum emphasizes key foundational texts; an in-depth examination of critical methodological issues; a solid command of the Arabic language; a familiarity with the most important Islamic sciences; and a firm grounding in the tools of learning with an emphasis on the qualitative elements of the traditional liberal arts. The idea of Zaytuna may be captured in a few phrases: As God's creation, we are all interconnected; through our diverse cultural histories, we discover our shared humanity and dream of a common future; our collective problems are, at their root, both spiritual and philosophical; the Islamic intellectual legacy begs to be integrated into a global conversation on great ideas shaping our planet; a well-designed college education will change lives and transform the world. |
